2027 Killeen Shoemaker High School defensive tackle Jamon Sanders picked up his latest offer from the UTSA Roadrunners on Wednesday, June 16. Sanders also has offers from Texas Tech and Mississippi Valley State.
Last season, he finished with 49 tackles, 13 TFLs, 3.5 sacks, and three quarterback hurries for the Wolves. Sanders was named the District 12-6A Newcomer of the Year.
Sports Madness caught up with him to discuss the latest in his recruitment.
How has the off-season been going?
"The off-season has been a lot of sweat and hard work. I have my off-season workouts with my team and then train with my trainer, Carlos Chester, from Nine 0 Elite Training Academy. And going to these camps, I have a lot of bruises and bumps, but I love it. This is what I work hard for."
How is the recruiting process going for you?
"The recruiting process has been new to me, and I am finally able to be contacted by coaches and get recruited. It's been very exciting. My first offer was just a big relief, and being in my coach's office and Texas tech telling me in front of my mom and Godfather that they were going to offer me meant everything to me. My head coach foreman is a real one. Then Mississippi Valley State came so quickly, and I was just so thankful it was happening. And now, with UTSA, I sit and think, wow, this is happening. It is a great feeling!"
How was it receiving your latest offer from UTSA?
"I was directly messaging Coach Nelly back and forth, and he had told me they were wrapping up on the camps, and he wanted to sit down and take a look at my film. About an hour later, he asked me for my contact info and my coach. Then I got a call from him and heard his voice. My mom was there, and she was smiling. I am so happy she's been there for every offer and my Godfather. He just told me they loved my film and they wanted to offer me. Hearing him say that was great."
How was the camp at Texas Tech? Tell me about receiving your first offer from them.
"Coach Blanchard (general manager James Blanchard) just told me, "Hey, you've come to our camps every summer, and we loved what we saw and seeing you at spring ball. We want to go ahead and offer you." At the camp, it was good to meet the coaches, and one of my old teammates, Malik Esquerra, is up there and showing us around on campus. I loved it. Texas Tech has an amazing campus!"
How has the camp season been going for you?
"Camp season is what I love. I have had a lot of invites every year since my 8th-grade year. My Godfather and I would talk about 4-5 camps a year because I don't want to overdo it with training, summer workouts, and just me being able to have time with my mom, brothers, and friends. So, I got invited to TCU camp, which was the first one, and then SMU came along. From there, I went to the UMHB camp, which was closer to me. That was also a mega camp but with fewer schools. Then, the Texas Tech camp was going to be my last one. I hit up all those camps, and it worked out perfectly being in front of a lot of coaches at SMU, being a high recruit there, and at TCU camp. So, the camp season was good for me."
What other schools are you hearing from?
"I have been talking to TCU, Texas, Louisiana Tech, Lamar, Wyoming, and Coastal Carolina, to name a few."
