San Antonio (Texas) Roosevelt offensive lineman Richard Severyns is one of many high school prospects beginning their summer football camp schedules. He recently attended a camp for the North Texas Mean Green on June 3 and has plenty more on tap.
Severyns, who had a great 2024 season for the Rough Riders, was named a District 27-6A First Team All-District selection. He also picked up his first offer from East Texas A&M on April 12. Gridiron Madness caught up with him to discuss his offer from the Lions and his recruitment.
How is the off-season going, and how is Roosevelt looking for the upcoming season?
"The offseason is going great for us. We have a lot of guys coming back on both sides of the ball and a huge, experienced offensive line up front. We play Smithson Valley, the defending state champions (Class 5A Division I), in Week One, and I believe that's our chance to show everyone we aren't the "same old Roosevelt" people like to say. We are going to compete not only for the district title but also for a state title!"
How is the recruiting process going for you?
"The recruiting process has definitely been a blessing! I've had a ton of schools visit me and reach out. I would say the top five schools that have shown the most interest are Louisiana Tech, Lamar, Stephen F. Austin, UTSA, and Incarnate Word. I'm really looking forward to seeing and working with these coaches within these next two weeks at camp!"
Can you tell me about receiving your first offer from East Texas A&M?
"Receiving an offer from East Texas A&M felt amazing, especially since it was my first one. I'm extremely grateful that Coach Townsend (assistant offensive line coach Andy Townsend) saw my potential giving me an offer. This offer has brought a lot of buzz around me. It's really opened up a lot of opportunities for me from other schools throughout their conference who have been reaching out to me. I look forward to balling out at their camps and potentially earning some more offers here pretty soon.
Coach Townsend took me on a walk on the junior day. He started by telling me some things I needed to work on to help me get better, then we moved on to where he gave me an offer and told me he knew I could play at the Division 1 level and then told me how big my senior year was gonna be. He told me I need to play well so I don't fall off of their board, but after playing this spring, I can tell you that my senior year tape is going to blow people's minds. People think my tape is good now, but what's coming for me next year will be huge!"
How was your Junior Day visit there?
"The Junior Day at East Texas A&M was awesome! I loved all of their facilities, and the coaches showed tons of love to everyone. That was one of the biggest things for me when I saw about 600-700 people at the Junior Day, and I saw these coaches showing love to as many people as they could talk to to make everyone feel welcome. Other than that, their spring game was very fun and I definitely enjoyed my time there!"
How did the camp at North Texas go?
"The North Texas camp went great! I won a lot of my reps and I definitely got after it. It was my first time meeting some of the new coaches that came in, such as Coach Crill, who I really like as a coach. I know that he could definitely develop me into something great if in my later future I ended up going there."
What other camps do you have coming up?
"I have Lamar on June 6, Tarleton State on the 7th, Stephen F. Austin on the 8th, UYRGV on the 9th, Incarnate Word on the 10th, Louisiana Tech on the 14th, UTSA on the 18th, and Texas State on the 21st."
