Cypress Lakes (Texas) cornerback Amiri Barnes committed to Texas State after his official visit with the Bobcats last weekend.
"My official visit to Texas State was amazing!! My favorite part was when we floated down the river. I was nervous, but it was a lot of fun. Of course, the photoshoot was also great! There was so much energy over there, that I felt like I was about to play a game!”
Texas State was the first school to extend an offer to Barnes on March 3, 2025, after he met with cornerback coach Matthew Gregg.
"Coach Gregg called me after one of my workouts and said he really was impressed with my film and my abilities. Then he asked if I had any offers, which, at the time. I didn't, and then he said he would be the first! We have a close relationship, and we talk every day. He is a very good coach, and he has coached a lot of great cornerbacks, with a few in the league. I am just ready to learn from him."
Barnes was able to meet with the entire staff during his time in San Marcos, including head coach GJ Kinne.
"The Bobcats coaching staff is like family! During the visit, we spent a lot of time together, and they are really good guys who are very knowledgeable and passionate about the game. Before my visit, I had talked to Coach Kinne over the phone and through messages. While I was there, we bowled against each other, and he's a great bowler and also a great guy!"
His commitment to the Bobcats was influenced by the close bond between the coaching staff and his relationship with Coach Matthew Gregg.
"I liked that the staff was really close, and they really cared for their players. Coach Gregg stayed in touch with me all the time, and it felt like they really wanted me to be a part of the program! They made it feel like home!"
Last season, Barnes was named a District 16-6A First Team All-District defensive back and Second Team wide receiver. With his commitment now set, he is looking forward to the start of the season and ready for the Spartans to make some noise.
"The off-season has been going great! I am getting stronger and faster and watching film, trying to improve my IQ of the game. Our team this year is looking really good and very promising to make the playoffs. Making school history is the goal. We have around 20 returning starters, and Coach Carter (head coach Tyrone Carter) has changed the identity of this program.
Barnes chose Texas State over offers from UTEP, Army West Point, Stephen F. Austin, Dartmouth, Houston Christian, North Texas, Montana State, Brown, Lamar, Washington State, and Sam Houston State.
Gods Plan Mari!! Prouda you brotha
