Louisiana Tech received a commitment from two-star tight end William Mayes of Katy Tompkins High School on Friday, June 20, just days after his official visit to Ruston.
"My visit to Louisiana Tech was great! I definitely felt a lot of genuine love from the players, the coaching, and the recruiting staff. Some of the highlights were definitely having a chance to talk to the President of the University, Dr. Jim Henderson, and just hearing the amazing things that are happening and that are going to happen not only for the football team but the University in its entirety. Luke Seib and Brayden Bockler were my hosts. We had a chance to tour the campus and the facilities, watch practice, hang out, and eat together," Mayes said about his time in Louisiana.
Mayes received an offer from the Bulldogs on May 6 after speaking with special teams coach Dan Sharp.
"Coach Sharp offered me, but it was just a quick conversion. He was super fired up, though, and he just told me that I was their #1 guy. My relationship with him is great, and he is a great coach and a guy who knows the game. We have definitely built a good relationship just by discussing football."
During his visit, he was able to meet with the Bulldogs' coaching staff, as well as head coach Sonny Cumbie.
"I met with Coach Cumbie, and we had a great conversation about their plans for me in the future. We also talked about the academic part of it and how their academic plans for the players are top in the nation. My relationship with him is great, and he is not only a great coach but a great human being! I connected a lot with him and his mentality. My relationship with the rest of the coaching staff definitely grew stronger over the last couple of days, as well. They are all great coaches and show a lot of love."
Mayes stated that it was the family atmosphere he observed around the Bulldog program during his time there that influenced his decision to commit.
"On my official visit, I was just truly blown away by the family aspect of their program, and coming from a high school program where we value family is huge in my process. Also, my family is all very close to campus, especially my brother, who is an alumnus of LA Tech. It was just a no-brainer at the end of the day, and I feel like God led me here."
Mayes also received offers from Stephen F. Austin, Memphis, UTEP, Texas State, Arkansas State, Sacramento State, North Texas, McNeese State, Lamar, Tulane, Houston Christian, Weber State, and New Mexico State. With his commitment now finalized, he can focus on the upcoming season.
"We've been putting in that work over at Tompkins, and I think we are going to prove a lot of people wrong this season. Our defense looks a lot stronger this season, and our offense is looking good, with a few key guys improving every day."
Mayes is joining a Bulldogs class that is currently ranked
#58 overall and #1 in Conference USA, according to Rivals. He had a message for Louisiana Tech fans: "To all the Bulldog fans, I hope you're ready because I am coming to compete and bring a conference championship to Ruston!"
